The difference between a cracked and blown head gasket can be rather hard to diagnose without actually getting in under the hood and removing a whole lotta bits to get to it (depending on your make and model, of course). This physical inspection can cost close to $2000 in labor before you've even got the correct answer to the issue. While I'm not saying that a faulty diagnosis is an excuse, just saying that it's a tricky piece of equipment to get to and quite an expensive proposition any way you look at it. Sorry for your troubles.

That stinks about your van. All dealerships are the same, they suck!! lol! Mine goes in for an oil change and I walk out with a $1,000 bill for who knows what! At least you got a new more reilable car!

Oh, I hate it when that happens. When you find a good mechanic - stick with them. Ask around for a mechanic that friends are happy with. It's an art and not all garages have it.
